Parts of the TV Industry

Production is how your favorite shows like Empire are written, filmed and produced.

Aggregation refers to companies that handle multiple channels like Disney or Fox.

The last step is content delivery, these are your tv providers like Directv and Spectrum TV.

Each one of these parts of the industry makes money in different ways and pass the expenses off to you, the consumer.

Production makes money when their tv show becomes a hot show. That way they can merchandise and make money by putting their images on other products.

Aggravation makes money by selling packages of shows to cable companies.

Cable companies as you probably guessed make money by delivering these shows to you.

Everyone is making money: the cable companies get paid on their infrastructure while the content creators earn affiliate fees along with advertising. When Your favorite show demands more money those charges get billed upward and you eventually end up paying for those rising affiliate fees.

What Your Cable Bill Can Include

  • The cost of your tv package, this is the largest charge you’re likely to see
  • Receiver fee: Most companies charge a rental fee per receiver after the first one.
  • A fee for the local channels
  • Cable maintenance fee
  • DVR for some companies
  • Broadcast surcharge which is a delivery fee for cable tv
  • Pay per view
  • A dish protection plan if you use a dish
  • Taxes which include state tax and other tv associated taxes

If you’re in a contract you’re likely to receive some discounts. If not it’s time to call your tv provider because you’re probably paying too much.
