Telling Stories Using Video

What I Learned about Editing Video

Everybody loves a good story; right now there are 3 ways to consume a story: reading, listening, and watching. My focus for 2018 has been to learn to tell better stories using video. To accomplish this I found somebody who has video creation experience and learned from them.

Jhem from the Jhem Unfiltered YouTube channel joins me today to share what she knows about video creation and storytelling.

The Creative Process for Creating Video

Purpose

The most important part of video creation is understanding what transformation you want the viewer to go through as a result of watching the video.

Next, determine what kinds of information and stories to share to get viewers to learn the things you’re teaching.

Filming

After coming up with what needs to be said it’s time to record. Nobodies perfect and it’s almost impossible to record a video from beginning to end perfectly. Instead, I learned to break the video down into each subject, record those and put them together later.

Pro tip: Look into the camera for one second before the video starts and one second after you finish speaking it really helps with editing.

Animation & Transitions

Animation helps change the pace of the video. It also helps watchers remember important talking points so they come away with the information they need.

Transitions help your video either tell a story or push the action forward. Illustrating your talking points makes them a lot more memorable than just looking at your face the entire time.

Music

Music ties your video together and helps your audience feel what’s going on in the video.

My friend recently went snowboarding in Colorado and borrowed my GoPro to film the adventure. I couldn’t include the hours of footage recorded during my short film about his weekend but I did get the best parts and turned them into this short film, I hope you enjoy.
