How We Use Executive Function
We use executive functioning skills which include basic cognitive processes such as attentional control, cognitive inhibition, inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility every day to get things done.
Some of us are naturally better than others at using these skills. For others, these skills don’t come as easily. Fortunately, because your executive functioning is composed of different skills we can improve those skills individually. Executive function can be broken into 3 main skills.
Working memory governs our ability to retain and manipulate distinct pieces of information over short periods of time.
Mental flexibility helps us to sustain or shift attention in response to different demands or to apply different rules in different settings.
Self-control enables us to set priorities and resist impulsive actions or responses.
